Charles River History in Waltham

Did you know there is a long history of paddling on this section of the Charles River? In 1902, the Boston globe quoted “More canoeing is done on this stretch of river than is done on all the rivers in the rest of the state of Massachusetts put together.” By 1920, the Lakes district was home to 6,000 canoes berthed at dozens of public boathouses. On warm summer evenings and weekends, a person could practically cross the Charles from Waltham to Weston by stepping from one canoe to the next.
